Morse Wins PB & J Sandwich Classic!

On Saturday, April 7, 2018, fifteen teams of students and professional culinary chefs competed in the Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Classic. The first annual event was open to the public to sample all the unique peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and have the opportunity to vote for their favorite. A panel of professional judges selected the overall event winner. All proceeds benefited Sports for Exceptional Athletes.

The competing teams were pre-assigned a flavor of jelly, peanut butter and loaves of bread. Teams provided their own secret ingredients for their sandwiches which had to be prepared on site. Morse High’s culinary students won the “Peanut Butter Cup” with a Thai Chicken, Mandarin Orange Marmalade, Peanut Butter Panini. They won the student competition and went on to win the grand championship – beating the restaurant winner. Congratulations to Sara Smith (Morse Culinary Arts Teacher) and her students!

The event was sponsored by Jellybear Jelly Company, Pacific Beach Peanut Butter Company, and Panera Bread.

Students Create PSA for Crime Stoppers

Mr. Williams from SDHS and Anthony Palmiotto from Pt. Loma High along with several of their students, created a PSA and attended the Crime Stoppers luncheon this past week. They were tasked to create a compelling Public Service Announcement for distribution in the county addressing campus violence and in particular, school shootings. The entire Crime Stoppers Team and SDUSD Police were overwhelmed with the result, which culminated in recognition of their efforts at this event attended by over 250 people. Below is the link for the video. They are overjoyed with the result and feel it will get the attention of kids, parents, staff and admininstrators throughout the county.

Month of the Military Child

April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, underscoring the important role military children play in the armed forces community. Month of the Military Child applauds military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome.
Some reasons to celebrate military dependent students:
  • Military kids move 3 times more than their civilian counterparts
  • Over 2 million have a mother or father who has served in Iraq or Afghanistan and many have served multiple tours .
  • They attend 6-9 different schools from kindergarten through 12th grade
  • They experience frequent separations from at least 1 parent and not just because of deployments. Duty days, TDY’s, schools, and trainings all take the service member away from them in addition to deployments

Military children are truly amazing and incredibly resilient in the face of challenges most adults would crumble beneath. They adapt to new places and faces all while dealing with frequent transitions within the home.

Convinced it’s time to celebrate them? While you are highly encouraged to celebrate the military kid in your life year-round, The Month of the Military Child in April gives us an opportunity to go above and beyond. Here’s a way you can celebrate and show support to the military children in your community: Wear PURPLE on April 15th. This is officially PURPLE UP day – a day designated to celebrate how awesome military kids are! Ask military-connected kids to share their experience or interesting facts about places they’ve lived. Their responses may surprise you and you’ll probably even learn a thing or two.

No matter how you choose to recognize the military child in your life the most important thing is that you do! Military kids are often overlooked, but they serve and sacrifice too. Let’s all take a minute to thank them.

Morse Students Engage in the Design Thinking Process

On April 4th, 200 students from Morse High School gathered in the cafeteria to engage in a day of collaboration, creativity, and design. Students began to learn about the Design Thinking process by redesigning the school lunch experience at Morse. Students gained empathy by interviewing a classmate about their lunch experience, worked collectively to define the problem of their “user” or interviewee, ideated to come up with creative solutions, and then created rapid prototypes that they tested and revised. Learning about this process was one of the various stages in their Spring project, Running on Rays, in which students are working on interdisciplinary teams (Engineering and Physics) to create solar powered cell phone chargers.
