National Hispanic College Fair Exposes Students to Future Opportunities

Students throughout San Diego Unified participated in the National Hispanic College Fair, on Friday, November 30, 2018. The event was held at the University of San Diego Hahn Center and they hosted more than 35 colleges and universities. The wonderful 1-on-1 representatives provided insight and information on admissions, colleges, majors and campus life for 11th and 12th grade students. Point Loma High School student, Abraham Arana, was excited about exploring the different options available to him and connecting with a multitude of representatives.

The National Hispanic College Fair has partnered with San Diego Unified counselors to provide this free opportunity for high schools. Jaime Chavez, Intervention Counselor, took over 48 students from San Diego High School and was already planning on increasing opportunities for students next year. School counselors work on creating connections for students. Dave Silva, Head Counselor at Mira Mesa High School highlighted the importance of connecting students with colleges representatives. He shared “they give them information and tell them that college is accessible and they can go”, an important message that continues to encourage our students to pursue their post-secondary dreams.

GSA Advisor Training Success

On Nov. 28th, LGBTQIA+ Education & Advocacy co-hosted a countywide GSA (Genders & Sexualities Alliance) Advisor Training. The event brought together GSA advisors from schools from all over San Diego County. Advisors were provided with tools and resources necessary to empower their students as leaders. The advisors were also treated to a panel where students shared about their needs from educators, students, and family members that best ensure their safety and affirmation at school and at home.

True Blue Buddies Police Mentorship Program

Students from Central Elementary were treated to a Thanksgiving Dinner True Blue Buddies style. Now in its fourth year, the family-oriented event hosted by the San Diego Unified Police Department brought a Thanksgiving feast to the students and their families. “It's important for us to let the kids know, and the families, that they can have a positive interaction with a police officer" says Officer William Corado.

The dinner is just one part of True Blue Buddies, a year-long mentorship program between kids and San Diego Unified Police officers. This year, the department paired 30 children from Central Elementary with its officers, along with San Diego County Probation and SDPD officers, and were supported by the Integrated Youth Services Division and Family Engagement Team.

“We’re here to promote positive interactions between kids and police officers,” says Sergeant Ivan Picazo. “Our officers check in with their buddy, have lunch with them, and give them encouragement in school.” Integrated Youth Services Division knows the importance of promoting positive and caring relationships between adults and students.

Unconscious Bias & Culturally Responsive Teaching Cohort 2

Youth Advocacy is excited to present the second cohort of "Unconscious Bias & Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices." This is a 2-part cohort training series. Attendance of both sessions will culminate in FREE online access to Dr. Wood's culturally responsive modules worth 1.5 CEUs.

Part 1, presented by Dr. Luke Wood of SDSU, will balance a discussion of issues facing Black students, focusing on unconscious bias and microagressions as well as offer research-based strategies for improving their success.

Part 2, presented by Ebonee Weathers of Youth Advocacy, will provide a framework for developing your ability to recognize students' cultural displays of learning and meaning-making, and respond positively and constructively with teaching moves that use cultural knowledge as a scaffold.

Importance of Language

At The Language Academy students get a fully immersive experience in either French or Spanish from grades K-5. On the front wall of the school students walk by a mural each day that states: “Through learning language we learn about culture. Through learning about culture we learn about respect for others. Through learning about respect for others we can hope for peace.” -Claire Kramsch, Through language immersion, The Language Academy is guiding students to change the world for the better. We look forward to seeing all they accomplish.

FIRST® LEGO® League Robotics

Marston Middle School Robotics students have been launched into space during the 2018 FIRST® LEGO® League season where they’ve had to explore, challenge, and innovate through an extensive research project and robot game centered on the theme of long term space travel. Students must research a real-world problem and either improve upon a current solution or invent an entirely new solution. They must also build and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® EV3 to complete up to fifteen challenges in a robot game that lasts only 2 minutes. Marston Robotics students split up into eight different teams and competed against each other for two spots at a Qualifying Tournament at High Tech High on Sunday, November 11th, 2018. Marston’s Robotics teams are called the Clairemonsters and represented well at the tournament, with both teams bringing home a trophy. Out of 24 teams, Clairemonster I brought home a First Place Trophy for their demonstration of the FIRST® Core Values and are moving on to the SoCal Championship at Legoland on December 9th. Clairemonster II impressed the judges with their research project on the social implications of long term space travel and brought home a Second Place trophy for their Huggable Hologram. Marston is incredibly proud of these two all-girl teams and all of their accomplishments. LEGOLAND...here we come!

Beyond Coding

December 3rd-9th was Computer Science Week also known as the Hour of Code Week. Over 180 countries are participating in more than 193,272 registered coding events for the Hour of Code Week 2018 worldwide.

While schools worldwide are participating in Hour of Code Week, one event at Dana Middle School has gone way beyond the key strokes of a computer. Students were tasked by their engineering teacher, Shereen Bastani, to design an electronically controlled safe which incorporates input & output functions, as well as analog and digital features including buzzers, motors, servos, LED lights and a programmable microprocessor. The students worked for the last two weeks in teams of two or three designing the ideal protective safe and writing a programmable code which would serve as the central intelligence to electronically control their safes. On December 3, 2018, students presented and demonstrated the functionality of their working safes to their parents and classmates. The presentations and designs were very impressive and testimony that great instruction leads to great results.

It's LIT(erature) Jr. Coming Soon!

The Youth Advocacy Department is excited to release "It's LIT(erature) Jr" this Spring! It's LIT(erature) Jr. is an identity-based curriculum module designed for grades 3-5 and is rooted in the California Common Core Content Standards as well as Teaching Tolerance's Social Justice Standards.

By creating a caring and culturally responsive learning community where cultural differences are acknowledged and valued, this standards-based curriculum highlights various and complex cultural differences that exist in the classroom and celebrates them as strengths worth exploring. Students will expand on concepts and issues from diverse perspectives, including race, gender, and sexuality, and gain a well-rounded understanding of people within various communities in relationship to history and society in general.

For more information on It's LIT(erature) Jr. (grades 3-5) or our existing identity-based curriculum modules It's LIT! (grades 6-12), contact Ebonee Weathers at eweathers@sandi.net or register online at https://goo.gl/mHNdJg

Aligning Integrated Multi-Tiered System of Support with Site Strategic Plan

The leadership team at Chesterton met on 11/30/2018 to go over the results of the FIA (Fidelity Integrity Assessment). The purpose of the FIA is to examine the current status of implementation of I-MTSS efforts, to capture school leadership team member perspectives as well as to inform teams when making I-MTSS implementation decisions. With these results they were able to identify priorities that aligned with their strategic plan of strengthening academic support in the area of Tier 1 Reading Instruction.

The team utilized the guiding questions from the FIA to drive a series of action steps that they will work on this year, which included Universal Screening in reading, developing an observation tool to ensure fidelity of implementation of a Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum as part of Tier 1 instruction, and ensuring collaboration of Education Specialists with the General Education teachers in the Professional Learning Communities to increase access for all students. These action steps will help to strengthen the strategic plan of the site to ensure that ALL students have access to Quality Tier 1 instruction in reading.

Nineteen SDUSD Teachers Receive VAPA Foundation Funding

Nineteen San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) teachers will receive awards to underwrite visual and performing arts – VAPA – related activities and purchases funded by the VAPA Foundation’s 2018-2019 VAPA Enhancement Program. The VAPA Enhancement Program, or VEP, enables any San Diego Unified teacher to apply for funds to enhance the quality of and access to arts education in the classroom or school. The VAPA Foundation funds arts enhancements not covered by a school’s budget.

This year, the VAPA Enhancement Program will fund field trips, artist residencies culminating in student performances, murals, ukuleles, new music and more. Each successful applicant linked the request to ongoing curriculum goals. Eight teachers will receive up to $2,500. Eleven teachers will receive up to $500. Recipients span elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the district (see list below), with over 1,350 students benefitting from this program. The reach extends onward to future years with new equipment and to the community via student performances, and as intended, these awards create a ripple of arts awareness at each site.

Larry Baza, VAPA Foundation President, says, “The VAPA Foundation exists to provide support for teachers of music, dance, theater, and the visual arts throughout the San Diego Unified School District. The VAPA Enhancement Program reaches across grade levels providing needed funds for special projects, materials and transportation for field trips. Nineteen teachers were successful in securing VAPA Foundation funds to create exciting student experiences for learning art forms.”

Holy Hollister

Early this week High School Nation promoted an anti-bullying campaign at Lincoln High School. The well-known brand Hollister formed a partnership with High School Nation to help promote that campaign. This year, High School Nation visited 50 schools to promote students putting positive vibes in the air. The students of Lincoln High School supported the anti-bullying campaign by writing positive words and/or phrases such as, “you have the potential to do and be anything you want”, on paper and placing them on the Food for Thought board for all to see. In return, students received some fun handouts and a drawstring knapsack. There is power in promoting positivity!!! Go Hornets!!
