Is Your Teen Getting Enough Sleep?

Adequate sleep improves memory, learning, and reduces sports injuries. Because of rapid growth during adolescence, teens need more sleep than adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teens require 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night.

Happy National School Counselor's Week!!!

We would like to take this opportunity to let you know that our families are lucky to have school counselors caring and advocating for all students. Build-Up Point Loma Nazarene University Visit

On Friday, January 25th, a group of students in the Build-Up Program at Serra High School embarked on a higher education exploration to Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU). Students took part in an engaging guided tour on the beautiful seaside campus lead by current PLNU student ambassadors. The tour was followed by an informative admissions presentation from the university outreach representative and a panel of current college students sharing their first hand experience at the university. Build-Up participants all thoroughly enjoyed this experience as an opportunity to recharge after their finals week.

“Build Up” is a program aim to increase post-secondary preparedness and readiness for our military dependents at Serra High School. It is a partnership between the Office of Children and Youth in Transition (CYT) at San Diego Unified School District and the TRIO Upward Bound program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) funded by a grant through the Department of Defense.

Exploring the Maritime Museum Through a BlueSTEM Lens

BlueSTEM teachers from Pacific Beach Middle School and Mission Bay High School, whose goal is to connect students to BlueTech education, career, and service opportunities, took advantage of an exploratory tour of the Maritime Museum. During their collaborative learning experience, teachers were challenged to wonder how they might incorporate the Maritime Museum into the BlueSTEM Pathway. Using this lens and a dream big approach, the teachers brainstormed creative ideas for new field trips, student led simulations, and designing experiences to learn about sailor health, boat health, buoyancy, and ship design. The staff is excited to partner with the Maritime Museum, and get students off campus for real world learning.

*BlueTech is the innovation of technology and services in the maritime and water industries.

Striving for Alignment Between Cluster Schools

In early January, Gear Up arranged for the the Taft English Language Arts department to visit Kearny 9th grade classrooms and debrief with Kearny teachers and administration. They walked through 9th grade English and Global Political and Economic Decision Making (literacy support) and observed the continuity of expectation between the two classes, as well as the tools and strategies students are using to develop critical reading and analytical writing skills. In the debrief, vice principal Rob Meza-Ehlert shared about the importance of structures such as common classroom expectations and policies, and then Taft teachers heard from Kelly Parker and Sarah Murray about how they collaborate and emphasize common strategies in both classes, such as the 9th grade compendium of resources. Taft teachers then spent the remainder of the day reflecting on ways to bring alignment between grade levels and how to implement some of the common structures in order to prepare students for the demand of high school literacy.

Equity Presents Itself in School Structures

Teachers from around the country came together to examine equity in master schedules at SDUSD’s first Power of Pathways and Partnerships Convention (PoPPCon 2019). Led by Cheryl Hibbeln, Executive Director of School Innovation and Integrated Youth Services, teachers and administrators met at UCSD and were presented with the question: Do the structures in place at your school support or stifle equity and access?

During lunch the group had an optional activity to work with Lelli Van de Einde, UCSD Structural Engineering faculty member and Nate Delson, Mechanical Engineering Professor UCSD. Lelli led a group through a SEISMIC outreach activity where the teams could build a 24inch (2ft tall) structure using K'nex building pieces and then "shake" them on the portable shake table that mimicked seismic (earthquake) activity.

Exciting Time at the Black College Expo

Students from San Diego high schools, as well as other students around the county, participated in the Black College Expo at Bayview Baptist Church on January 29th. Students and families circulated around the room to speak with admission officers from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), with military personnel, as well as community partners. Many students received admissions offers on the spot, most earned scholarships worth thousands, and received cash prizes for participating in the fair. Actor Kel Mitchell and other entertainers provided a dynamic and fun experience for students to speak directly with HBCU admission officers to plan their future. The Counseling & Guidance Department congratulates all the students who earned admission offers and scholarships.

Becoming Meddlers in the Middle

Science teachers from all over San Diego Unified School District got together to participate in their 3rd session of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) professional development. They experienced learning from the student perspective, noticing what keeps themselves engaged and what makes their minds wander. They participated in a collaborative design process and then an experiment that helped concritize their understanding. From there teachers more deeply learned the content. The goal for our students is to come up with their own understanding and conclusions rather than regurgitating information from the “sage on the stage”. By becoming “meddlers in the middle” the teachers can allow students to gather data and make interpretations. When the teacher sees students going in the potentially wrong direction, they can give them more resources and more experiments that will help them in the quest for deeper learning opportunities.
STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Clean Tech Competition

The Clean Tech Competition is an international research and design challenge for 15-18 year old pre-university students. It is a way for students to test their ideas against both a global issue, as well as competitors with very different experiences than their own. We have found students tend to choose to solve problems that affect their local region the most, and we encourage this! There are so many unique situations, and we want as many addressed as possible.
