Serra High School's Endangered Species Day

In May, students of an interdisciplinary teaching team from Serra High School showcased their work from a project teachers designed and implemented with their students during the Spring semester. Parents, siblings, and community members in attendance were excited to view and celebrate the hard work of students. During the exhibition, students showcased Adobe Spark presentations featuring threatened or endangered animals that they would encourage the zoo to designate as “priority species.” Students used rhetorical strategies they learned in their English class, research on biodiversity and endangered species and habitats in Biology, and photography or videography skills in their Career and Technical Education course to accomplish the task. Now, pictures from Serra High School students are featured at the entrance to the Office of Secondary Schools at the Ed Center!

University City High Biomedical Seniors Present Their Proposals To ER Staff

Seniors who have spent the last four years in the CTE Biomedical pathway at University City High School where given the opportunity to present their Emergency Room project/proposals to doctors and nurses who run ER centers at our local hospitals. The goal of the project in the Biomedical Innovation course was to design an emergency department that takes efficient patient care to the next level. Seniors worked in teams designing physical layouts, developing a new innovation and proposing appropriate staffing levels to achieve their goals. The power of these projects comes from the feedback given by the panel of ER professionals who are in these facilities on a daily basis. The seniors are now preparing to participate in hands-on work based learning internships that will take place at various local hospitals and clinics during the second semester.

12,000 College Credits Projected To Be Issused To San Diego Unified Students

For years, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs have been the leaders in providing a rigorous curriculum and opportunity for students to earn college credits. Over the past three years, San Diego Unified has worked tirelessly to grow their concurrent enrollment program. This is when high school students take college courses at the high school campus. If we add in our high school students taking course(s) on the college campuses then we have just under 3000 students enrolled in college coursework. Between quality instruction from college instructors and support from our skilled school counselor colleagues our students are projected to earn 12,000 college credits. This will save our students time and money, and most importantly are proving to themselves they can handle college work before ever stepping foot on a college campus.

An Ocean of Opportunity

Students from Logan K-8 visited SeaWorld's Ocean Link Lab where they got a behind the scenes glimpse of the inner workings of the park, including the SeaWorld Cares rescue facilities. The Ocean Link Lab program focuses on ocean health and career awareness. Students learn how human actions can have a positive or negative impact on our ocean environments and things we can do to ensure a healthy ocean for generations to come. San Diego Unified’s Office of Secondary Schools is proud of the program we have developed in partnership with SeaWorld. This excursion reinforces Next Generation Science Standards and helps students dive into their Strengths Interests and Values as they relate to Health Career Themed Pathways. This unique opportunity will be offered to additional San Diego Unified students throughout the 2017/18 school year. This experience is only open to San Diego Unified School District students.
