SDSU Engineering Compact

San Diego Unified students wishing to pursue an engineering degree through San Diego State University’s College of Engineering have the opportunity to apply for the preferred admissions program.  This admission assistance program between SDSU and California Project Lead The Way Affiliate is designed to provide a valuable mechanism for increasing the number and percentage of high school graduates interested in studying Engineering at SDSU with foundational Engineering skills learned from the PLTW curriculum. Students who have participated in this PLTW program have shown that they are better prepared, have higher retention rates, and reduced time to graduation.  The number of students registering in the preferred admissions program continues to grow each year and admissions into SDSU also continues to get more competitive.  Please see the SDSU Preferred Admissions Program information sheet to see the qualifications, requirements and deadlines for submission.

Kearny Students Launch Into Real-World Projects

Over the summer teams of teachers came together at San Diego Unified’s two-week long Project Based Learning Institute to collaborate on designing curriculum that engages students in rigorous, real-world projects aligned to key learning targets. Last month, Kearny High School’s 9th grade Digital Media and Design students launched their semester-long project with incredibly powerful presentations about by people whose lives have been directly affected by drug and alcohol abuse. These presentations served to launch their project, “I Have a Say in My Future”, which asks students to explore the question: “How do the choices I make in today’s world help determine who I become tomorrow?” For this project, the team is partnering with SAY San Diego to create media products that help prevent the abuse of drugs and alcohol.

Family Fun with STEM in Clairemont!

STEM In Your Backyard is a monthly family friendly fair that pops up in neighborhoods all over the county!  This month, it’s in Clairemont.

FREE family fun with STEM is on Saturday, November 18th  from 10am-1pm in the gym at Madison High School.

STEM In Your Backyard provides access to free, meaningful STEM experiences for the whole family by bringing the spark of science directly to communities throughout San Diego. Each STEM In Your Backyard is like a street fair: local companies, non-profits and community organizations set up exhibit booths with fun, hands-on STEM activities for all ages. Students will have the opportunity to interact with STEM professionals, providing students with positive and diverse STEM role models and changing the image of STEM. This STEM exposure encourages students to stay involved in STEM and to consider careers in science, technology, engineering or math.

Leading Innovation At San Diego Unified

On October 18th, 19 middle and high school teachers from around the district participated in their first day of the Leaders of Innovation program, a new professional development experience designed for teachers who are compelled to find new and better ways to meet their students’ needs. The year-long program provides supports, such as mentorship, and structure for teachers to take on innovative projects in their classrooms, at their schools sites, or in service of the district as a whole that aim to increase student engagement and improve student academic outcomes. This group of innovative teachers will present the results of the projects as well as engage in leadership development to help disseminate best practices and to encourage others to cultivate and nurture their innovative spirit.

Congratulations Online Learning Students

Congratulations to all of the hard working staff and students involved in online learning and credit recovery. During the first quarter of SY 17-18 there were 159 credits awarded for online learning. These credits are in courses that students need for remediation or to fill gaps in learning in order to stay on track to graduate. This achievement represents an outstanding effort on the part of students and staff to complete a semester course within the first quarter.  A special congratulations to the students and staff in the Innovation Centers that resulted in 104 credits awarded during this time frame. Students and staff showed perseverance and a focused determination to complete the course, and then enroll in the next course needed for graduation.
There are currently 30 secondary schools across the district with students enrolled in online learning courses. Congratulations to all!
