Serra Students' Work Featured at the Museum of Photograhic Arts

In the Spring of 2017 Serra High Students from Michael Pedersen’s photography class entered a photo contest for the Museum of Photographic Arts. The contest was open to K-12 students in Tijuana and San Diego county. Four students were selected by a panel of photographers and the curator of the museum to exhibit their photographic art in the Museum from November to February. Not only did they select our students to exhibit but one of the student’s work is used as the main image for the entire exhibition on the MOPA website and on the large signs around Balboa Park promoting the exhibit.  The students loved attending the exclusive opening night with their families.

Bridging the Gap Between Education and Employment

The Education to Employment (E2E) Lab is a new space at Kearny High School that helps bridge the gap between education and employment through hands-on learning connected to the world of work. This week it was in full swing, as 11th grade students took an inventory to better understand their strengths while another group planned for an upcoming Intro to Project Based Learning experience for the freshman students that began on 9/25.

Project Based Learning Institute 2017 + PBL Scholars

This summer over 80 secondary school teachers from across the district met for two weeks to design interdisciplinary projects for the 2017-2018 school year. Participants engaged in professional development around Design Thinking on the Midway Museum, worked alongside nine “PBL Scholars” (10-12th grade student interns trained in PBL pedagogy), attended job shadow opportunities organized through CCTE, ConnectED, and The San Diego County Office of Education, prototyped projects at Kearny High’s Education-to-Employment Incubation Lab, and proudly presented their projects during a gallery walk to Dr. McQuary, San Diego Unified Board Member, site administration teams, and staff from the Office of Secondary Schools. Stay tuned for updates as teams launch their projects with students.

Tips on How To Study Effectively

Build good study habits to create success!
  • Create a quiet space to study (reduce loud music and TV)

  • Use a calendar
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Be an active learner and ask questions
  • Develop good study techniques (create associations and metaphors to relate new ideas to what you already know and to improve understanding)
Be careful with these major problem areas:
  • Procrastination
    • Get started quickly. Read the instructions. Use a schedule.
  • Concentration
    • Reduce or remove external distractions. Study with others or see a tutor.
  • Boredom

ABLE will begin its pilot year with a kick-off luncheon scheduled for November 18, 2017. Students joining the program this year will be automatically accepted into the program and will have the opportunity to stay involved with ABLE through their high school graduation.
In 2018, the program will revert to an application process for 10th grade students only. Students will be accepted based on information presented in their application.
