2018 JROTC Regulation Drill Competition
|
Patrick Henry High School team and unit commanders accept the Captain J. Moreno Trophy from MOWW member Cpt. Debbie Kash
 |
While the sound of the school bell signals the end of the school day to many students, for over a thousand JROTC cadets countywide, it serves as a reminder to head over to their JROTC unit areas to practice for the annual San Diego Unified School District Regulation Drill competition. Cadets from each grade level participate in competitive tryouts within their respective units for the honor of representing their schools at drill competitions, often dedicating several hours each day practicing their drill technique to distinguish themselves from their peers.
Once the best of the best have been selected by their cadre and unit leaders, they spend countless hours perfecting their drill movements and execution. The culmination of these extensive practices is the first phase of the annual San Diego Unified School District JROTC Regulation Drill Competition, consisting of the Best Drilled Platoon and Best Drilled Squad competitions. This year, the event was held in two phases; the first having taken place at Serra High School on December 9th, 2017, the second, on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at James Madison High School. Teams from each of the 13 units came together in fiercely competitive drill events, where they were closely evaluated by several military officials serving as judges for the competition. Each unit aims to achieve the highest overall score possible in each category to attain the coveted Captain J. Moreno Best Drilled Unit Trophy, awarded annually to the SDUSD JROTC unit whose performance in regulation drill exceeds that of all others in the brigade. The award, named after the late U.S. Army nurse and former San Diego High School cadet Captain Jennifer Moreno, serves to commemorate her superior dedication and service to her country and community, and is an immense source of pride for any unit deemed worthy of an award bearing her name. The recipient of this year’s Captain Moreno Trophy went to Patrick Henry High School, for its outstanding overall performance in all aspects of the Regulation Drill Competition.
This year’s first place winners in individual events include Morse High AJROTC’s First-year Color Guard, Scripps Ranch High AFJROTC’s Varsity Color Guard, Patrick Henry High NJROTC’s First-year and Third-year Best Drilled Individuals (BDIs), Platoon Drill Team, and Squad Drill Team, and Point Loma High NJROTC’s Second-year and Fourth-year BDIs.
Congratulations to all winners and all teams that participated!

Take Me Home Registry
|
 |
What is the Take Me Home Program?
The "Take Me Home" registry promotes communication and gives Law Enforcement quick access to critical information about a registered person with disabilities in a police emergency by capturing information such as a full description, routine/favorite attractions, communication, emergency contact information, as well as other special needs the registered person may require.
The “Take Me Home” Program is a regional photo-based information system hosted by the Sheriff’s Department accessible by all Law Enforcement in San Diego. It is designed to assist Law Enforcement (Police and Sheriff) during contacts with members of the community who have disabilities such as, but not limited to Autism, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Down syndrome, deafness or any other Developmental Disabilities.
The program promotes communication and gives Law Enforcement access to critical information about the individual enrolled. The Take Me Home Program can provide Law Enforcement with emergency contact information, detailed physical descriptions, photograph of the individual, known routines, favorite attractions, or special needs of the individual. This information can assist Law Enforcement in communicating with, locating a residence for, or handling an emergency involving an individual with special needs. This program has photo recognition technology attached to it. If an individual is located and cannot communicate, a photograph of the individual can be taken in the field, sent electronically and checked against those in the Take Me Home Registry for similarity or a match.

Scripps Ranch High School Butterfly Effect
|
|
The Butterfly Effect embodies a concept popularized by Mahatma Gandhi: “”Be the change you want to see in the world.”
The Butterfly Effect Mission Statement is as follows:
The Butterfly Effect is an underground movement redefining philanthropy one “butterfly” at a time by providing individuals the opportunity to give to a cause close to their heart. Harnessing the power of social media, we create a ripple effect of contagious generosity through our Butterfly Drops and Wahl2Wall installations. We recognize that we can be the change we want to see in the world by facilitating small acts of kindness, encouraging generosity, and promoting creativity.
The Butterfly Effect is an international organization founded in San Diego. The Butterfly Effect focuses on creating a positive impact beyond an individual, and into schools, communities, and the rest of the world. Recently, the Butterfly Effect Initiative has brought this movement to Scripps Ranch High School. The Butterfly Effect represents hope and transformation. Scripps Ranch High School students have created a beautiful butterfly on their school campus where students and staff come together to take pictures and meet new friends on campus.
Students were brought in for an assembly and were asked to reflect on the following questions-
- What lights you up ? (What brings you so much happiness/fills you up?)
- What breaks your heart? (What do you wish you had the power to change?)
- If you had a sum of money to donate and make a difference, where would you want it to go and why?
As students reflected on their own life experiences, they gave powerful answers from the heart. Their answers ranged from giving their time to organizations for people with special needs, to saving animals, and helping their own peers. The experience was very moving!
