National School Counseling Week is February 5-9, 2018. During this week, School Counselors across the nation are celebrated for their important work, through the American School Counselor Association, School Districts and various educational communities. This year’s recognition theme is: School Counselors: Helping Students Reach for the Stars. National School Counseling week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in supporting student achievement and life success. School Counselors are critical partners in the development of our children and youth as they support the Academic, Socio Emotional and College and Career readiness of all students.
The Counseling and Guidance Department would like to thank you for appreciating the work our PK-16 School Counselors do within our diverse communities, as they positively impact and change students’ lives.
School counselors foster students’ inquiry about their unique and individual abilities, strengths, interests and talents. School counselors work in partnership with the school community, students, parents and community organizations to support students’ development, personal and educational growth.
The school counseling profession is focused on creating systemic change and leadership within our individual educational communities. ASCA School Counseling Mindsets & Behaviors describe the knowledge, skills and attitudes students need in order to achieve their life and career goals. Through an Integrated Multi-Tier System of Support (IMTSS), School Counselors seek to understand systems of prevention and intervention within the school community. This integration supports collaboration across disciplines to better understand our students and remove possible barriers to educational success.
Please support our District in honoring School Counselors for their dedication and service to our students, families, staff and community. The American School Counselor Association has additional resources you can access in recognition of National School Counseling Week. Please use the link below for celebration ideas:
We thank you for your partnership and ongoing support as we relentlessly continue to Unlock the Genius of Our Students, Maximizing their Growth with and in Every Interaction. |

Morse High School Wins Teen Iron Chef
|
| On Thursday, January 18, San Diego Unified Culinary Arts and Management students battled each other and first year culinary arts students from the Art Institute of California – San Diego. They prepared a three-course meal with a secret ingredient in the 14th Annual San Diego Teen Iron Chef competition. This year’s winning team was from Morse High School. They have competed for five years and is their first win. The students had one hour to make three courses all from scratch. They were judged not only on taste and appearance but also safety and sanitation, communication, knife skills and organization. Every year the competition gets tougher. Judges are major players in culinary like Deborah Scott from the Cohn Group, Claudia Sandoval winner of Master Chef, the executive chef of the Brigantine Group, Ken Irving, owner of Bleu Boheme and more.
Congratulations to Morse High School, all the competing teams and their teachers for showcasing the excellent work students are doing.

Roosevelt Middle School - Unlocking Their Genius
|
| Hundreds of Roosevelt Middle School “RoughRiders” are participating in the Unlocking Their Genius experience. Counselors first guide students through the Thrively strengths assessment. This is a series of engaging questions about their interests, career aspirations and extracurriculars that ultimately produces a profile uncovering their passions, and innate strengths. This is an exciting approach to educating the whole child through an immersive experience. We are very proud of the Roosevelt counseling team helping each child Unlock Their Genius.

E2E and University of San Diego
|
| Kearny’s E2E lab was created in partnership with the USD Institute for Entrepreneurship in Education department as a way to help get students more exposure to industry, post-secondary options, and work-based learning opportunities. Since opening in September, this lab has offered experiences for 1761 students* in conjunction with 9 industry partners. (*Note: number reflects student experiences. Individual students may have used the lab more than one time.) Kearny’s students are being exposed to a whole new way of learning. What happens when you take the walls off the classroom? Anything you want! The excitement is being felt around the campus and the cluster, but there is a need to capture how valuable this innovative approach to education really is. E2E lab coordinator, Candice Fee, is working closely with Yaoran Li, Research Associate at USD, to develop a comprehensive survey that will be given to students before and after their E2E lessons to determine the impact the experiences have made on student mindset, self-efficacy, and self-esteem. |

Student Equity Ambassadors
|
 | The 2017-18 Student Equity Ambassadors met at Kearny High School in December to prepare for the January Student Equity Coalition. Students analyzed CHKS survey data and discussed it with their fellow Student Equity Ambassadors. They participated in a Socratic Seminar and spent some time getting to know each other a little better. |
| Then in January, the 2017-18 Student Equity Ambassadors joined community members and partners, families, board members, district and school site staff at Scripps Ranch High School for the January Student Equity Coalition. A solution-centered model was used to continue the discussion on ways to improve the connection, involvement, and inclusion of all students. Student Equity Ambassadors Johnny Nguyen from Madison High School and Maya Salameh from San Diego High School helped host the event alongside the Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department’s Program Manager and Resource Teacher. The Student Equity Ambassadors used CHKS survey data and personal experiences to share their thoughts and opinions and worked with other attendees to ideate and develop prototypes.

 | February16th - Rabbit Proof Fence
Set in 1931, RABBIT-PROOF FENCE brings to the screen the horrific consequences of a British policy that removed Australian children who were of mixed white/Aboriginal background from their homes (a practice that continued until the 1970s). In this true story, Molly Craig, her sister Daisy, and their cousin Gracie are all "half castes," what the British call children of mixed-race couples. Their British fathers have long since left, and their homes are with their mothers in Jigalong, an area along a rabbit-proof fence that cuts through the middle of Australia. British officials, wanting to improve the upbringing of all half-castes, forcibly take the children to an internment camp where they are to be trained as domestic workers and integrated into society. Once there, Molly's longing for her home is so strong that she makes an escape with her sister and cousin, following the fence to get back to Jigalong. |
