Thelonious Monk Institute Performing in San Diego

The San Diego Unified School District was one of only three nationwide selected this year to be provided free public school “peer-to-peer” concerts and workshops by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. With lead funding from United Airlines and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute will bring this unique education program into San Diego public schools May 21-25. Combining performance with educational information, these “informances” will be presented by six of the country’s most gifted high school music students along with internationally acclaimed jazz guitar recording artist Bobby Broom, Kansas City jazz and blues vocalist and former winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Vocals Competition Lisa Henry, and renowned jazz educator Dr. JB Dyas. Each school visit will include an assembly program featuring musical performances for all students, followed by jazz workshops for each school’s jazz band and choir with the visiting student performers playing alongside and sharing ideas with their San Diego counterparts.

San Diego Unified Students Find Inspiration, Resources at First African-American Achievement Summit

UCLA-bound Brittany Jasper will graduate from Morse High School this year feeling a bit less nervous and a little more confident about her future.

Brittany was among 650 graduating seniors from San Diego Unified high schools to participate in the first African American Achievement Summit, an event at San Diego City College aimed at promoting success after high school and demystifying the college experience.

“There are so many great people here today, it has already opened up many doors for me and I just know people will take a lot of knowledge and networking away from this event that will put them in a great position after high school,” Brittany said.

Organized by the San Diego Unified School District and the San Diego Community College District in partnership with UCSD Create and the San Diego Workforce Partnership, the daylong event teamed up students with near-peer mentors and participants from the collegiate and professional communities.

Among the goals of the event is to encourage student connections to community groups that support their post-secondary ambitions, emphasize the power of a strong cultural identity, and reinforce the importance of crafting a personal narrative.

Superintendent Cindy Marten shared the experience with students, encouraging them to learn from their mentors about their success after high school graduation.

“We believe in your hopes and your dreams and we want to stand by you as you seek to accomplish them,” Marten told the students. “What we know for sure is that when you set out on a path to follow your dreams you make this city, you make this state and in fact you make this world a better place… so all we have to do is make sure you have everything you need to succeed today, tomorrow, and well into your future because when you succeed you in fact change the world and that’s why we believe in you and support you.”

Keynote speaker Nate Howard, one of NBC News' 28 black leaders in the nation under 28, encouraged students to "tell their story before someone else tells it for them."

Workshops at the event offered information about resources for navigating workforce preparation and post-secondary planning, stress management and wellness services, financial literacy, and college life through the lens of near-peer mentors.

SDSCPA Earns “Exemplary Arts School” Recognition

The Arts Schools Network (ASN) has recently recognized the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts as one of seventeen exemplary arts schools for 2018.
Schools whose applications meet the Arts Schools Network’s criteria for exemplary practice are awarded an Exemplary School designation, which lasts for five years. SDSCPA and the other sixteen designees from across the nation will be recognized at the national ASN Annual Conference in October.
Principal Tim Farson stated in a news release, “This honor recognizes the hard work and commitment of the SDSCPA staff and families that have invested to create sustainable art and academic programs that show exemplary pre-collegiate arts training with depth and breadth.”
The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts is an arts-focused public magnet school for students in grades 6 through 12 who have a strong interest and talent in the arts. All enrolled students choose an arts major: dance, theatre, music, creative writing, or visual and media arts, supported by new UCCI courses that integrate the Arts, Media, and Entertainment CTE pathway into English and social studies.

Bullying Prevention

When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time.
Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.”
Check out the federal website hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and read about how you can help prevent or stop bullying.

Mission Bay music director keeps the jazz age jumpin’

From sdnews.com
Mission Bay High School music director Jean-Paul Balmat is passionate about his music.

That is why he’s been able to cobble together a multi-faceted program, including a mambo and jazz-ensemble band, the Preservationists, literally from scratch.

A saxophone player since fourth grade, Balmat noted he was inspired by now-retired MBHS band director Rey Vinole.

“I told myself, ‘One day, that is what I want to do, I want to come back to Mission Bay and keep this program going.’”

Characterizing himself as “a dorky kid,” Balmat confided to being “in the band room every day at lunch practicing.”

Admitting being “as local as it gets,” Balmat was born and raised in PB, having attended Kate Sessions, Pacific Beach Middle and Mission Bay High schools. “This is my home. I have deep roots in the community,” said Balmat.

A 2002 MBHS grad, Balmat was in the school’s music program back then. These days, he’s returned to oversee and reshape its bands, orchestra and music department.

“Vinole started it in the 1980s and I was in that dixieland jazz band,” he said. “I pretty much reinstated that program, which had ended for two years, when I came back in 2006.”

One of the nation's premier traditional youth jazz bands, the Preservationists continue to be featured at venues throughout San Diego County and California including: Anthology, House of Blues, Dizzy's, Petco Park, SeaWorld, Tango Del Rey, Lux Art Institute, Ocean Beach Music and Art Festival and the Sacramento Jazz Festival.

Gypsy jazz and mambo quartets have since joined the ensemble mix led by Balmat alongside the cornerstone Preservationists.
