3rd Annual CODEchella

Congratulations to the winning teams for scoring 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the 3rd Annual CODEchella Competition. The winning student teams joined 115 students from five school districts throughout San Diego to showcase their coding skills. The middle school students had to create code to race Spheros Robots through a series of complex mazes. The high school students had the opportunity to code their own flying Robolink mini-drones.

Thank you to our regional sponsors for bringing this fun event to life for our students: Doing What MattersRegional PathwaysRobolink, San Diego County Office of EducationSDG&E, and San Diego Unified School District.

These regional educational partners, community leaders and leading high-tech San Diego professionals created a fun and challenging competition for the students. They hope it will inspire and prepare San Diego’s young adults to take interest and pursue careers in the growing computer science and tech industry.

"We are so excited to participate in this year's CODEchella,” said Kristen Koeblin, Director of Education at Robolink. “This coding competition is the perfect way to introduce more of San Diego's students to what they can do with computer science. We hope that this event inspires the participants to create amazing things with code and pursue majors and careers in STEM fields."

A special thanks to computer science teachers from San Diego Unified School District for creating the fun coding Spheros curriculum.

“Coding is fun and creative, and anyone can do it,” said Gail Lake, a teacher at the College, Career and Technical Education at San Diego Unified School District. “We’re excited to provide this opportunity for students to come together to collaborate, code and create. This is the third year of this competition, which has grown to include students of all levels of experience, from middle school to high school.”

“This has been the best day ever,” said Haley Lange, a student from Coronado Middle School, who scored 3rd place in the Spheros competition. “I love to code and despite some challenges, I am so proud we came in 3rd place.”

There are an estimated 500,000 unfilled U.S. jobs that require some level of computer-science understanding, yet three-quarters of the nation’s public schools do not offer any computer science courses. Despite growing demand for jobs in the field, it remains marginalized throughout the US K-12 education system. California is one of 17 states that does not require all high schools to offer computer science courses.

“The need for these high-tech skills is critical to the San Diego workforce and we are so thankful to our partners for giving us the unique opportunity to teach digital literacy to our kids,” said Ashley Packard, Work-Based Learning Manager at JA of San Diego County, a non-profit that teaches kids how to get a job, start a business and manage money.

Has your student’s genius been unlocked?

Have you heard? All 6th-12th graders are participating in the Unlocking the Genius program to learn about their personal strengths, interests and values as well as explore career aspirations. Upon completing the assessment on Thrively, each student received a personal uplifting profile about their strengths.

By using Thrively for Unlocking the Genius, teachers and parents learn about the whole child to provide a deeper insight to the student beyond the typical academic profile. It provides an additional dimension of the student to provide personalized learning opportunities.

Parents can connect with their student’s account to learn about their strengths, areas of interest and career aspirations, as well as view their digital portfolio and journal entries. To find out how to connect to your student’s account click here.

If your student and/or their school hasn’t started Unlocking the Genius yet, it’s not too late! Talk to their school to find out when they will be participating. It’s easy to begin and students just need a computer with internet access and earphones. You can learn more about how to get started here.

Not sure what to do this summer? Thrively has curated hundreds of hours of content that can help your student learn more about their personal areas of interest and career aspirations. “PATHWAYS” provides opportunities to explore student identified careers of interest and recommend other careers based on their strengths and interests. “ACTIVITIES” suggest opportunities in San Diego based on the student’s interests. “SPARKS” offers daily headlines and brain boosters to ignite curiosity and complement learning. These components of Thrively are a great way to have your student explore far beyond the classroom walls for free!

CPMA Dancer is Youngest Artistic Growth Award Winner

A budding young dancer has been awarded the VAPA Spotlight Award for Artistic Growth in its inaugural year. Elijah Mack, an 8th grade student at Creative Performing and Media Arts Middle School (CPMA), is the youngest award recipient in the Artistic Growth category.
“Elijah has been an outstanding student at CPMA since his 6th grade year,” his teacher Sara Dickman stated. “During the past 3 years, he has shown dedication, leadership, and incredible growth as an artist in the field of dance. Not only has his technique improved, his conception of what it is to be an artist has completely transformed as seen in his choreography and performance.
This is not Elijah’s first award for dance. During his time at CPMA, he has been awarded scholarships with San Diego Dance Theater which ultimately led him to becoming a paid dancer in San Diego Dance Theater’s Trolley Dances.
Larry Baza, president of the new VAPA Foundation and vice chair of the California Arts Council, handed out the 12 VAPA Spotlight Awards, 3 of which were for Artistic Growth, in an award reception on April 29th before the Band and Orchestra Honor Concert held at Copley Symphony Hall. The small reception boasted a list of VIPs including the San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten, school board members, UC San Diego Dean Cristina Della Coletta and UC San Diego Chancellor Dr. Pradeep Khosla.

UC San Diego Academic Connections

Summer (July 8–28, 2018)
Academic Connections provides an opportunity for high school students with a 3.3 (or above) weighted cumulative GPA to get a jump start on the college experience. We invite students to explore the best UCSD has to offer. In Session I, students choose one of approximately 25, three-week courses offered. Classes meet five hours a day, with a maximum of 22 students per class, to ensure quality interaction with instructors and instructional assistants. Academic Connections instructors are typically UCSD doctoral students who design and instruct the course. This engaging combination brings freshness and excitement to the classes.

A large part of the college experience for students is living on campus in the residence hall, which enables them to see first hand what it is like living on a college campus. As a residential student, the student has many opportunities to participate in activities in the afternoon, early evening and weekends. These activities include sports, arts and crafts, music, dances, talent shows and more. Participants are enabled to take advantage of the resources the beautiful UCSD campus has to offer. The resident halls are staffed with an experienced and trained Resident Dean, Assistant Resident Dean, office staff and residential assistants who provide supervision 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.

Some Advantages of Attending UCSD Academic Connections

  • College-level academic, residential and extracurricular activities
  • Exposure and access to state-of-the-art courses, technology, and facilities
  • Earn college prep units and recognition for program participation on college admission applications
  • Study with other like-minded academic students from all over the country and the world
  • SAT preparation

Important Dates

  • Application deadline June 15, 2018 (or until course is full)
  • Student Notification - within five working days after receipt of required documentation
