Four Weeks of Hands-On Fun!

This past summer, twenty students from San Diego Unified high schools took part in a hands-on residential program called COSMOS – The California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science. They selected their cluster (area of focus) such as robotics, computer science and engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science, lasers and light, renewable energy and synthetic biology. COSMOS students live on-campus for four weeks.
During the day, students worked with University of California faculty in labs to obtain first-hand experience in their cluster’s topic. In the evenings, students participated in talent shows, crafts, bonfires, games and more. COSMOS strives to strengthen not only a student’s academics in STEM, but their social-emotional growth as well. Students left the program with an experience of a lifetime, making friends from California and beyond, and networking with UC faculty and students.

The twenty students from La Jolla, Madison, Mission Bay, Morse, Point Loma, San Diego International Studies, Scripps Ranch, Serra, and University City High schools attended one of the four COSMOS sites – UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz or UC Davis. Each cluster has a Teacher Fellow (a high school STEM teacher) who works closely with the students and faculty in the lab and with scientific communication. This year a record six of the ten Teacher Fellows at UCSD were San Diego Unified teachers.

Applications for summer 2019 will open in January. To learn more about COSMOS and the clusters each site offers, visit their websites:

The mission of COSMOS is to motivate the most creative minds of the new generation of prospective scientists, engineers and mathematicians who will become leaders for California, the nation, and the world. The program aims to create a community of students who participate in and contribute to an intensive academic experience delivered by distinguished educators and scholars.

SDUSD Kinder Teachers Tackle STEAM and the Next Generation Science Through Project Lead the Way

This week San Diego Unified School District kinder teachers investigated the Next Generation Science Standards Cross Cutting Concepts of Structure and Function at Kearny High School. Kinder teachers connected literacy and engineering through Project Lead the Way investigations. Teachers learned how classic stories like Jack and The Beanstalk and The 3 Little Pigs could inspire engineering projects like: building a beanstalk that will support a golden egg and a house that the BIG bad wolf can't blow down. Not only is STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math) and Next Generation Science learning informative, it is also fun, and helps to reinforce 21st century skills like collaborative problem solving.

It’s LIT(erature)!

The Lincoln High School Social Science Department is taking on Youth Advocacy Identity-Based Curriculum Modules, “It’s Lit(erature).” Teachers will be promoting social justice, student agency, and strong standards-based instruction that centers around 3 modules: LatinX-The Departure & Arrival of Millions, Black-Moving from Oppression to Empowerment, and LGBTQIA+ History-The Long Road to Visibility, Equality, and Acceptance. Lincoln is excited to infuse their current social justice work with these unique modules offered by the Youth Advocacy department.

Promoting Literacy in Math

On Wednesday, October 3rd, Kearny math teachers participated in a professional development workshop focusing on increasing literacy in the mathematics classrooms. Throughout the day, teachers planned for ways to use strategies such as sentence stems, collaborative conversations, and pre and post assessments, all emphasizing ways to teach math content while giving students opportunity to explain their thinking in writing and in speaking. Using the critical concept of Generating Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning as a focus, teachers collaborated around ways to immediately support students to extend their thinking by making claims about their math processes, and to use evidence and reasoning as support.

Khan Academy: Revision-Ready!

Teachers are gearing up for a 1-hour Webinar with representatives from Khan Academy. After 6 weeks of implementing Khan Academy in the classroom, teachers will have an opportunity to discuss best practices, what's working well, and what questions and concerns they have for continued use. Teachers using Khan Academy are practicing what they preach--always reflect on your work, and revise, revise, revise!

Dockless Dilemma

Dockless bikes and scooters have flooded the City of San Diego. There are many differing views as to the positive and negative impacts regarding this latest wave of the sharing economy. 11th grade students in Hoover High School’s Academy of Informational Technology will explore the pros and cons of dockless transportation through the “Dockless Dilemma” project. They will tackle questions like … Does the incorporation of dockless bikes and scooters provide transportation justice? Is bike and scooter transportation safe? What education is needed for dockless bikes and scooters? What do we do with broken, abandoned bikes and scooters? After students engage with dockless businesses, riders, City Heights community members, and the local government, they will focus in on the needs of a specific group. With this group in mind, they will define a problem and create a solution. Hoover students will then present their solutions to the City of San Diego with the hope of improving the dockless transportation experience.

Essay Structure Through Song?

English essays are a song and dance in Mrs. Riley’s class! Her 9th grade Clairemont High School students have been learning about essay structure so that they can write an argument essay about something they value. Sure, they’ve seen model essays and they’ve practiced analyzing evidence in their daily warm-ups, but what strategy has made the most impact? It’s the song and dance! They reach high up to the sky for their exciting opening, they sway back and forth to demonstrate commentary. Time to restate the thesis? Roll your arms, of course! The things students are writing about in their ‘values essay’ are diverse: racing scenes in The Fast and the Furious, favorite “Friends,” the upside down in “Stranger Things,” water polo, and even bananas. But no matter what each student values, they’ve got the structure down pat thanks to Mrs. Riley!

Audubon Hosts Professional Learning on IMTSS

“What if we could be more powerful by rearranging components of our system that are already there?” On October 3, 2018, Audubon (K-8) hosted a professional learning session on Integrated Multi-Tiered System of Support. IMTSS acts as a way of organizing supports within a school so that the academic side, behavioral side, and the social-emotional-learning side are aligned to serve the whole child. This session presented an overview of the framework and how to support ALL students through this lens. Teachers, counselors, psychologists, site leaders and other support staff from Audubon, Fulton, and Pacific View attended the session. The framework is based on the California SUMS (Scaling Up MTSS) initiative that began in March, 2016. Participants were provided opportunities to learn about strengthening their own practices around data collection, analysis, and designing supports so that each and every child gets what they need in order to be successful.

Start with Hello

The students at Birdrock Elementary in La Jolla started their Tuesday with a "Hello". Katherine Aud, resource teacher from Integrated Youth Services Division along with San Diego Unified Police Sergeant Contreras and Campus Officer Noyes greeted the students as they arrived to school. "To promote a positive school climate, it only takes one hello or one good morning or one smile to get a student's day started off positively," said Miss Aud. Sgt. Contreras added, "It is important for community role models to take time out of their day to greet students as they start their day. I feel sometimes we overlook how a simple hello can positively impact a child's day." If you are interested in having our School Police Officers welcome the students or have other ideas to promote a positive school climate at your school sites, please contact Katherine Aud at (619) 725-7329 or kaud@sandi.net to arrange an event.
