Muirlands Middle School has earned a Heart Safe School Accreditation thanks to Girl Scout Troop 3803

Muirlands Middle School became the first school in the state to earn a Heart Safe School Accreditation thanks to the hard work of Girl Scouts Selma Hyytinen, Allison Foerster, Maggie Johnson, Natalie Saham and Amber Watt. They chose this accreditation as their Silver Award project for Girl Scouts. This was a very big project for Troop 3803 and they spent many hours for several years to accomplish it. They were able to enlist the physical education department at Muirlands to teach the required CPR, the school staff to assist in running emergency drills, and the girls help to spread the importance of CPR at community events. This is a great example of students taking action to solve a real world problem and now the girls plan to help other schools become Heart Safe.

Audubon PrimeTime Students Serve and Shine

The WE Schools Program was first introduced to Audubon PrimeTime middle school students last school year as they worked on WE Rise Above, making a documentary on “Acceptance.” The campaign was such a big hit that the kids could not wait to get started this year. The middle school students just finished their event on WE Scare Hunger. They created a “Fall Shake Down” Dance which consisted of collecting canned goods for the San Diego Food Bank in order to raise awareness of the root causes of hunger. One can for admission, additional cans for snacks, refreshments, and access to the photo booth. The WE kids’ goal was to collect 250 cans, but instead reached 378 cans of food! Congrats to Audubon’s WE Kids!

Audubon PrimeTime dancers opened the 33rd Touching Minds Shaping Futures (TMSF) Conference held Saturday, October 23 at Lewis Middle School. For the past 33 years, The Children’s Initiative has hosted a half-day conference for more than 500 before and after school staff in San Diego County. TMSF conference trains and educates staff to better respond to the needs of their students and celebrates their commitment and contributions to their students, programs, and schools.

If You See Something Say Something PSA Campaign

The Office of School Innovation and Integrated Youth Services Division has partnered with the San Diego Unified School Police Services Department to launch the "If You See Something Say Something" campaign. The goal of this campaign is to encourage and empower each student to report suspicious and/or criminal activities happening on our school campuses to law enforcement, school staff, anonymously, by calling Crime Stoppers or by using the Crime Stoppers App. On November 1, 2018 the CCTE multimedia production high school teachers gathered together to learn about this exciting opportunity for their students to create a 30 second public service announcement (PSA) video. The PSA will highlight the Students Speaking Out program sponsored by San Diego County Crime Stoppers. The mission of Students Speaking Out is to empower young people to use their voices to make schools and communities safer. We believe that students can make a difference in bringing an end to senseless violence and dangerous activities that interfere with young people achieving their dreams. We will do EVERYTHING we can to protect them, to remove barriers and empower our communities to stand up and let their voices be heard. One video will be selected from all the video submissions to be honored at the annual "Enough is Enough" luncheon where it will be debuted to all law enforcement agencies in San Diego County. For more information, contact Sgt. Carlos Vargas (cvargas2@sandi.net) and/or Katherine Aud (kaud@sandi.net).

Brains, Brains, Brains Takeover Linda Vista!

The Society for Neuroscience (SFN) Conference was back in San Diego this year and on November 5th and 6th, a contingency of scientists, graduates and undergraduates spent the day at Carson, Linda Vista and Montgomery STEAM Magnet Schools.

The volunteers worked with students to create science based art projects that included building neurons from pipe cleaners and ink prints showing the similarity between plant structures and the brain’s neural network. Throughout the day students were able to ask the scientists questions about the brain and how it functions. The University of California San Diego provided a variety of brains, human and animal, for students to observe, handle and study.

The two day long outreach is a result of the collaboration between NW Noggin and the San Diego Unified School District’s Office of School Innovations, which supports schools in the Linda Vista STEAM Magnet Pathway.

Garfield High's 21st Annual Thanksgiving Gourment Luncheon

On November 15th, Garfield High School held it’s 21st Annual Thanksgiving Gourmet Luncheon at The Prado in Balboa Park. The lunch was prepared by the Garfield HS Culinary Arts students and the Prado chefs & banquet staff and served to over 360 attendees. The event was generously sponsored by the Cohn Restaurant Group with the proceeds going to support programs at Garfield High. Over the past twenty years the luncheon has raised more than $500,000. The program was hosted by student speakers Anthony Rios, Shaila Campos & Jessie Gomez.

School and Zoo Groom Future Female Scientists

The women scientists at the San Diego Zoo not only take care of many animals but they also moonlight as role models for female students at Roosevelt International Middle School. During the school year, zoo scientists and Roosevelt teacher, Marci Sponsler, lead an after-school enrichment club called “Girls in Science” (GIS). Students meet once a week for an hour and a half to learn about ecosystems, habitat conservation, and animal life-cycle systems from female scientists working at various capacities at the zoo.
“My favorite part about Girls in Science is that we get to visit the animal hospital,” says Teagan Brokaw, an eighth grader at Roosevelt. Teagan’s love of animals made it a natural choice to be part of GIS. Her animal family at home includes a dog (Marley), a lizard, and two cats (one of whom is 18). Whenever she has the time, Teagan enjoys riding and caring for horses, and she hopes to become a big animal veterinarian one day. Learning about the science behind different jobs at the Zoo helps students like Teagan build more confidence in pursuing the science-oriented careers that are often dominated by males.
GIS, one of the most popular clubs at Roosevelt, is among a dozen offerings fully funded by the Friends of Roosevelt Foundation (RooFriends), a non-profit organization comprised of parents, guardians and community members that raises funds to support educational and extracurricular programs. “Unlike many schools, we’re fortunate to be able to provide these meaningful learning experiences to our students at no cost,” says Mauricio Ahumada, RooFriends president. “The female professionals at the Zoo do an amazing job inspiring Roosevelt’s young ladies to explore career possibilities and dream big.”

Mission Bay on Election Day

On November 6, 2018, Mission Bay High School students were able to participate in Election Day activities in many ways. In Gebel Anderson’s freshman Government class, students had digital ballots and submitted their votes in their classrooms using Google Form. Mr. Anderson prepared students through a variety of activities that helped them make decisions about candidates and ballot measures. One of these activities included a literacy strategy in the form of a Structured Academic Controversy (SAC) to help them make decisions about the propositions. In SAC, students work in groups of four. Within the group, pairs are assigned the “Yes” or “No” perspective of a proposition. Finally, each pair in the group of four presents their “Yes” or No” evidence to one another and the whole group tries to come to consensus. In this way, students were able to present both sides of each proposition to their classmates and students were then empowered with the information they needed to determine their stance on each proposition. On Election Day, students came prepared with the materials that helped them make their final decisions.

For students aged 16 years or older, students were able to participate as High School Student Poll Workers through the County Registrar of Voters. Nearly 50 students, organized by history-social science teacher June Andrews, were able to join the County Registrar of Voters to facilitate elections throughout San Diego. Mission Bay Students experienced Election Day despite the barriers of being under 18..

Marston Mocks!

History-social science teacher Renee Thomas brought a real simulation of the democratic process to Marston Middle School students in the form of a mock election. Ms. Thomas’s students set up a polling site and included student poll workers, poll booths, a ballot box, and tables where students could examine their ballot books one last time. Using the Secretary of State’s “California Student Mock Election” ballot and “I Voted” stickers made the experience that much more authentic for Marston students.

Prior to “Election Day” at Marston, which was held in advance of actual Election Day on November 6, 2018, Ms. Thomas prepared students through projects that required students to research candidates and issues. Students made campaign posters, decorated the polling center, and had a real-life experience that will stay in the memories of Marston students. Results of the California Student Mock Election can be found here: http://studentmockelectionresults.sos.ca.gov/.

School-Based Health Centers Support Good Health and Education!

Eight School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) – full-service health clinics located right on SDUSD school campuses – are providing services every day to promote student health and support academic success. SDUSD and the Nursing & Wellness Department have forged partnerships with community health providers including La Maestra Community Health Centers, Family Health Centers of San Diego, San Ysidro Health Center, and San Diego Family Care to establish clinics at four elementary schools, one middle school, and three high schools. In addition, three mobile medical units operated by Family Health Centers of San Diego provide services at multiple locations throughout the district.
SBHCs promote health and educational equity because they provide a source of health services for students who may have limited access to medical care. Services provided include well-child exams, sports physicals, immunizations, sick visits, Medi-Cal enrollment, (limited) dental services, integrated behavioral health, and case management service/referrals. The school nurses at the eight SBHC sites are a critical foundation of the school-clinic partnerships, collaborating and utilizing clinic services to manage chronic conditions such as asthma, link students to support services such as counseling, and promptly identify/treat acute illness to minimize school absence.
Research shows that SBHCs have a positive impact on attendance, dropout rates, disciplinary problems, and other academic outcomes. Students who have access to a SBHC are more likely to have yearly medical and dental check-ups, and less likely to go to the emergency room or be hospitalized, especially for conditions like asthma.
Healthy children make better students! For a complete list of the participating schools and their partnering SHBCs, go to www.sandiegounified.org/school-based-health-centers. For more information about the services and schedules of the mobile medical units, call the Nursing & Wellness Department at (619) 725-5501 or contact your local school nurse.

Pacific Beach Middle School Loves a Clean San Diego

“How do we use water?” asked the educator from I Love A Clean San Diego. Sixth grade hands flew up in the air and their answers were put on the whiteboard. Students then categorized them into the four main ways we use water: recreation, hydration, hygiene, and irrigation. Next the educator from I Love A Clean San Diego took the class through a discussion on watersheds and pollutants. Their science teacher, Stefan Bauer, comments on how impressed he is with the answers they are sharing. The lesson wraps up with a hands-on activity that requires students to identify the mystery of what has been added to water in several water bottles. This activity piques the students’ interest and leaves them really considering the human impacts on the water around us.

As part of BlueSTEM Pathway, The Pacific Beach Middle School Science Team puts a major emphasis on water throughout their curriculum. Water is an essential part of life in the Mission Bay Cluster, a community surrounded by water from Rose Creek, Mission Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. This lesson is just one example of how the 6th grade science team is laying the foundation of the focus on water that will continue from 6th grade and throughout their learning at Pacific Beach Middle School and Mission Bay High School.

Entering BioTech

Students from the Kearny Cluster schools are determined to understand what it takes to become a scientist. From biological technology to medicine they are learning how to fight off influenza through a variety of design thinking techniques. Students first come up with creative solutions to demystify that the flu is not the same as the common cold and that the vaccine gives you the flu. They next figure out how to make the vaccine more affordable and more accessible. One creative approach, for example, was to partner with Lyft and create candy vaccines! These students are learning that to make it in the 21st century, they have to know so much more than book skills; they are motivated to be creative innovators.
