CyberPatriot XI National Finals
|
|
Setting the precedence in the corps, the CyberPatriot team from Scripps Ranch High School made history by winning first place in CyberPatriot All Service Division National Competition for the first time ever in CA-935th history.
Consisting of seniors c/Colonel Valerie Ho, c/2nd Lt Alex Roh, c/Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Nguyen, c/Captain Shane Donahue, and c/Major Evan Dicker, the competing lineup spent their last CyberPatriot competition accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel Michael Sheldon during the week of April 7 to April 10 in Baltimore, Maryland. When the cadets were not in competition mode, the cadets, as well as Lieutenant Colonel Sheldon, spent their free time in Baltimore by exploring the city's streets and shops.
Throughout the year, the cadets on the CyberPatriot team worked hard and competed against five-thousand other schools to reach the national competition. Competing under the team name, Team Byte Sized Falcons, these senior cadets slowly but surely were able to narrow down the competition at the national competition and emerge at the very top. Not only were the cadets able to bring home the first place trophy, each member of the competing lineup received a two-thousand dollar scholarship. Team Byte Sized Falcons were also the AT&T Mobile Device Component Winner, and also had the chance to meet and greet several high-ranking officials.
A huge congratulations to Team Byte Sized Falcons as well as the CyberPatriot team and good luck to the seniors in the next chapters of their lives!

Montgomery 6th Grade and the San Diego River
|
|
Students at Montgomery Middle STEAM Magnet are preparing for their June 5th exhibitions. The sixth grade English, science, and history classes have been learning about the San Diego River and the impact of the river on their community. They have researched the Kumeyaay, considered the impact of pollution, and planned for ways to protect and preserve this San Diego resource. They have compared the San Diego River to other rivers around the world and are writing a letter to the editor advocating for why it is critical that San Diego citizens take action to protect the river. Throughout their study of the river, students are learning to collaborate together, think critically about topics impacting their community, and see connections between disciplines and classes. Please plan to attend the exhibition to see their final products and to hear directly from students about their learning.

Writing Workshop at Kearny DMD
|
|
In Stephanie Clay’s 10th grade English class, students are reading The Book Thief and practicing close reading and writing along the way. Last week students were closely examining a passage for the author’s use of particular words that create an overall tone. As the teacher modeled the analytical writing structure, students collaborated in the development of the paragraph in order to practice strong academic writing. She focused on creating a strong claim, followed by sound evidence and reasoning to support their thinking about the text. After the whole class model was created, students then used their annotations and thinking to write their own paragraphs of analysis. This structure of whole class writing development empowers students to have a model for their own quality of writing and creates opportunity for them to transfer those skills to other classes such as writing in science and in history.

Scholarship Opportunity - Ethical Torch Essay
At the Better Business Bureau (BBB), we believe it is never too early to introduce and emphasize ethics. At the high school level, students begin to face ethical decisions that may impact the rest of their lives. They serve as role models whose moral compass not only guides their actions, but also influences those around them. The BBB seeks to honor ethical students for doing the right thing with the Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship .
Students in grades 9-12 (graduating classes of 2020-2023) are invited to apply for the BBB Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship, for their chance at receiving a $1,500 scholarship!
When faced with a situation or circumstance where there is a choice to be made, how will they respond? This essay prompt challenges students to dive into inner-conflict, while describing resolution tactics for their unique encounters with ethics and integrity. The Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship honors ethical students for their essays on “The Importance of Ethics and Integrity in our Community.”
Five students will win scholarships and receive recognition at the Annual Torch Awards for Ethics celebratory reception this October. Applications are open now through August 30, 2019!
Visit scholarships.bbbcommunity.org to learn about all of BBB's Scholarship Opportunities.
