San Diego Met Hosts ProjectCon



The staff and students of San Diego Met, a Big Picture Learning (BPL) school, volunteered to host this year’s ProjectCon 2019 at their site on the Mesa College campus on April 29 and 30.

ProjectCon is an opportunity for educators from across the world to come together, in a BPL network school, to learn from the life of the school -- the students, staff and leadership -- around best practices for student-driven project work. At ProjectCon, students have the opportunity to get real-time feedback from peers and BPL advisors from across the country. At the same time, BPL advisors from across the country have the chance to get real time feedback on their project-based learning practices from their peers, as well as from an audience that matters most: students.

Using the Genius Labs for Science!


Roosevelt students are learning how to integrate the laser cutter, 3D printer and a Carvey machine into their everyday schoolwork. These students in particular are interviewing the staff to create a unique teacher appreciation gift for each teacher on campus.

Genius Labs are full of powerful tools that mimic the technology available in STEM professions. Students that can hone their design skills can create many things, from replacement parts for a broken appliance, an artistic masterpiece, and even their very own 3D printer. With these skills students can bring to life anything from their imagination, thus preparing them for the robotic future which awaits us all!

Learn By Doing: English Teachers Engage in Best Practices



How can we make grades more meaningful for students and parents? Teachers from three areas of San Diego Unified got together to explore grading practices and how different schools and colleges have reinterpreted what it means to get credit. The day culminated in a Fishbowl Socratic Seminar where teachers envisioned the future of their English classrooms. Throughout the day they also LEARNED by DOING. They engaged in many of the same strategies they ask their students to do. They used discussion and reading strategies and protocols; they read and annotated texts. They even wrote a model essay like 11th graders have to do on standardized tests. These teachers are dedicated to creating the best opportunities for the success of their students!

Academic League finished another fantastic season! Fifteen SDUSD schools compete with schools in other districts in weekly matches for nine weeks. Congratulations to all SDUSD teams that competed this year: Clairemont, Henry, Hoover, Kearny, La Jolla, Madison, Mira Mesa, Mission Bay, Morse, Mt. Everest, Pt. Loma, Scripps Ranch, SDSCPA, Serra, & University City! 
SDUSD is proud to share our 4 winning schools: Serra High earned 1st place in Central Division Varsity & Junior Varsity! La Jolla High earned 1st place in Northern Division Varsity wildcard & Novice! Physical Education District Leaders



Congratulations to the new cohort of physical education district leaders; Marisa Hernandez- Garfield High, Brandon Cahoon-Adapted Physical Education, Laura Brodfuehrer- Adapted Physical Education and Greg Farrar- Mission Bay High School. They have spent the 2018-19 school year examining at their instruction and implementing new strategies to improve the quality of physical education for their students. These teachers were able to network with other teachers from all over the County to share best practices. Areas of focus included: Increasing Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity, Assessment, Meeting the Needs of Each and Every Learner and Student Centered Learning. This is a collaborative effort between the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego Unified School District. They join an impressive list of past participants from schools all over the district.

Spring Is Here…..And So Are Head Lice!


As the weather warms up and flowers are in bloom, there is also an increase in head lice as children spend more time playing together outside, having sleepovers, and sharing ponytail holders, hats, and sports headgear. Even though head lice and nits (eggs) are not a threat to health, they are a frustrating nuisance. Prompt treatment of a child with head lice ensures minimal disruption of their education.


When a student is identified as having head lice, the student will be sent home at the end of the school day for treatment. It is the responsibility of the parent to treat and control head lice infestation. Key to success in controlling head lice, with small chance of recurrence, is in the removal of all nits after the use of the pediculicide. After treatment at home, it is mandatory for the student to return to school the next day, via the health office, for inspection. The student may return to class provided the head lice have been treated and there are no live lice in the hair, even if nits (eggs) are still present. Parents are encouraged to continue removing nits until the problem is resolved.


There is no evidence that mass screening (school-wide or whole classrooms) helps to control head lice infestation or re-infestation. Parents or guardians are encouraged to incorporate inspecting their child’s hair as part of their regular hygiene routine. Other prevention measures include teaching your child to avoid sharing head-touching items such as hats, hair ties, sports equipment, and ear buds; and keeping your child’s hair (if long) tied or braided close to the head. Humans of Lincoln

Just like the “Humans of New York” blog, “Humans of Lincoln” depicts the cultural richness and truth of the students at Lincoln High School. The “Humans of Lincoln” mission is to uncover and discover stories, from all stakeholders in the Lincoln community to show resilience and strength unique to this community of scholars. The goal is for Lincoln students to compile 100 stories from the community stakeholders.

English teacher Lauren Wilensky designed this project with her 11th grade students in which they photograph and interview a subject from their high school. Wilensky saw a need to get students talking to one another to create change in the culture and climate. Together with fellow 11th grade teacher, Cassandra Gately, students discover their voice by speaking with different audiences. In doing so they identify the strengths and significant stories within their community.

Then students write a short story of their subject’s lives and add one photo. The photos and a quote from the person who was interviewed are displayed in an ongoing slide presentation. The short stories and photos opened the eyes of many to the issues students deal with everyday, including their successes and failures, their future aspirations and more.

By teaching 11th graders interview skills, how to listen to others, and how to construct a narrative, students were empowered to move into critical conversations about connections and develop empathy for their peers and neighbors. Students will be exhibiting their work April 23rd as they continue to interview community members to gather more narratives.

Bell Middle School participates in Bright Camp at Webroot


Eighth grade students at Bell Middle School participated in the first ever Bright Camp at Webroot in April!

Webroot is a cybersecurity and data protection company that harnesses the cloud and machine learning to predict and protect against cyber attacks in real time.

The Bright Camp experience at Webroot included a visit to their building in University City and a tour to meet professionals along the way. Students were in groups of four and matched with a software engineer to learn coding skills and created robots with Arduino boards. The activities provided coding instruction and allowed students to explore their creative side as well as each robot was unique and served different purposes.

Experiences like Bright Camp are especially important for students as we prepare them for careers of the future. The 8th graders learned about the various careers available at a local cybersecurity company, and it gave them a unique perspective on what the jobs entail day to day.

Personal interactions with professionals make students confident in their abilities and the students walked away inspired. They know to follow their passions and set new personal goals to follow their dreams!

Re-Envisioning the High School Experience


As San Diego Unified strives to provide innovative learning experiences for students, we asked our current students about their personal journeys to identify ways we can improve the High School Experience.

Ten of our High Schools were represented at our first Re-Envisioning the High School Experience event in April. We are very thankful to the students who participated and represented Clairemont, Crawford, Madison, Mt. Everest Academy, San Diego, Scripps Ranch, SCPA, Serra, The MET, and University High School!

The agenda was created by Endiya Griffin, from The MET with her team of student leaders. Endiya is a current Junior and did an exceptional job facilitating the day while exploring what the future of education in our district could look like.

Students explored what support from teachers looks like, how lessons can be designed to meet the needs of the individual student and prepare them for life, and how the movement can be sustainable in the future.

The Office of STEAM Innovation is excited to continue working with our students to re-envision the student experience to ensure our graduates are prepared for careers and opportunities aligned with their strengths, interests, and values!

FutureBoss Entrepreneurship Opportunity (Scholarships Opportunity)

FutureBoss is a free entrepreneurship training and competition for juniors and seniors at the University of San Diego. This is a FREE 4 day program with at least $2,000 in scholarship award opportunities this summer at the University of San Diego. Training includes industry leaders and the USD School of Business faculty.

FutureBoss, will help students turn an idea into a presentation that you will present to investors. It's similar to Shark Tank!

Scholarship Opportunity - Ethical Torch Essay

At the Better Business Bureau (BBB), we believe it is never too early to introduce and emphasize ethics. At the high school level, students begin to face ethical decisions that may impact the rest of their lives. They serve as role models whose moral compass not only guides their actions, but also influences those around them. The BBB seeks to honor ethical students for doing the right thing with the Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship

Students in grades 9-12 (graduating classes of 2020-2023) are invited to apply for the BBB Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship, for their chance at receiving a $1,500 scholarship!

When faced with a situation or circumstance where there is a choice to be made, how will they respond? This essay prompt challenges students to dive into inner-conflict, while describing resolution tactics for their unique encounters with ethics and integrity. The Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship honors ethical students for their essays on “The Importance of Ethics and Integrity in our Community.”

Five students will win scholarships and receive recognition at the Annual Torch Awards for Ethics celebratory reception this October. Applications are open now through August 30, 2019!

San Diego Model Railroad Museum Summer Camp

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park is offering summer camps for students entering 2nd grade in the fall through 8th grade! The camps begin June 17th and run through August 2nd.

Participants are invited to explore the multitude of disciplines required to build a model railroad. They will work from a track plan and construct an operational, themed scale model, from track laying, ballasting, scenery construction and circuitry.

Campers will investigate and apply design principles, research unusual railroad cars, and learn why engineers use arches in the construction of railroad bridges.

Birch Aquarium Summer Camp

Are you looking for a summer camp for your student?

The Birch Aquarium at Scripps provides Summer Camp with learning adventures for children between 4 and 15 years old, June 24th through August 23rd, 2019.

The accredited camps merge scientific exploration with hands-on fun and learning! Campers investigate marine habitats, create ocean art projects, learn about careers in oceanography, and combine the science and sports of surfing and snorkeling!

Summer camp scholarships are available for families in need of financial support.
