Montgomery Middle STEAM Magnet Featured in Share Your Learning Video

Share Your Learning, an organization whose goal is to have 5 million students share their learning to a public audience, recently released a new promotional video featuring Montgomery Middle STEAM Magnet school (View Video). Share Your Learning has been highlighting the work at Montgomery around student-led conferences and school-wide exhibitions. Students at Montgomery have expressed that they love being in charge of their own conferences and are excited about interacting with the community through their exhibitions.

According to Share Your Learning, “when students share their learning with an authentic audience, we provide them with an opportunity to share their story, reflect on their growth, and engage in real dialogue with others about their learning and their futures.” Many San Diego Unified Teachers have joined a group of 300,000 other educators that have pledged to have students share their work publicly via the organization, Share Your Learning (www.shareyourlearning.org).

Visit Share Your Learning at www.shareyourlearning.org to learn about the free resources teachers are using to set up student exhibitions, student presentations of learning, and student-led conferences.

Student Power Collaborative

AMPLIFYing The Student Power Collaborative had its first meeting on Thursday, April 11 at Morse High School. There was student and staff representation from Crawford, Lincoln, Morse, and Serra to share and discuss the successes and needs of their advocacy clubs and efforts. The group discussed the importance of healthy youth/adult partnerships, networked and worked towards a plan for future meetings. Karolyn Curtis and other students of The One World Club showcased the work of their Week of Consciousness which raised both awareness and funds around the cause of ending hate speech. With Dr. Larkin, they also shared the process of how they organized their first annual Walk for Peace, the idea of 9th grader Juan Hurtado.
The Student Power Collaborative is excited to continue this work, with their next meeting in May, and are looking forward to including more student advocates from more schools across the district. If you are interested in learning more about or joining this collaborative, please contact Ciria Brewer in the Youth Advocacy Office at cbrewer@sandi.net.

Bell Math Teachers Focus on Equity in Collaboration with Math Educators from Across the State

Bell Math Teachers, Janet Gil and Rachael Jones, took advantage of sponsoring from the California Mathematics Project, allowing them to participate in the 3rd Annual CANMEE convening in Temecula, CA on April 11-12. CANMEE (California Action Network for Mathematics Excellence and Equity) brings together math content experts and educators from across the state to “use lesson study to continuously improve mathematics learning, instruction, and the lesson study process by ensuring that mathematics education is rigorous, high quality, accessible, and equitable for all students. CANMEE can show that diversity is an asset.” (UC Regents, 2019) At the convening, Gil and Jones attended workshops on culturally relevant teaching and the lesson study process, then visited a classroom in which a public lesson study was held. Both teachers returned with renewed energy to improve their individual practice and to inspire their colleagues to push forward with instructional shifts that will benefit their students.

Library Exhibitions Celebrating Identities

As part of the Youth Advocacy Department’s commitment to making school into a place where ALL students want to be, we have coordinated with the professionals at the Instructional Media Center (IMC) in sending out packets of display materials to librarians and library techs that focus on different identities. LGBTQIA and African-American History Months were recognized and highlighted with materials and a list of books that explored these identities and experiences. The vibrant book displays created an upsurge in interest in these books by their students. Youth Advocacy will continue to create packets that can be reused annually for the many identity celebrations reflected over the course of the school year. We also will support a parallel rollout for all elementary school libraries.

Hoover’s Peace Conference Against Gun Violence

On Saturday, April 19, Hoover’s Social Justice, ALMA & Health Academies along with The National Conflict Resolution Center, came together to hold their first annual Peace Conference Against Gun Violence.

About 70 students and staff attended to not only discuss the problem but the possible underlying causes. After a panel of community leaders shared the impacts of gun violence, students led restorative circles discussing and identifying the causes as well as solutions. They then had the opportunity to learn about mental health and ways to take action within their community. Students are looking forward to continue their learning around the needed steps to take action against gun violence in their school and community with this being one of their first steps.

Careers in Genomics at J. Craig Venter Institute

San Diego Unified students participate in the STEAM Leadership Series in partnership with J. Craig Venter Institute and Intellectual Capital.

On Wednesday April 10th 75 students from Clairemont, Crawford, Mira Mesa, San Diego, and University City High Schools' BioMed CCTE pathways attended The Opportunities in Genomics Experience at the J. Craig Venter Institute for a day of career exploration and hands on biotech activities.

Superintendent Cindy Marten kicked off the event and was followed by a keynote from Dr. Venter and the President of JCVI, Dr. Karen Nelson. JCVI is a world leader in genomic and bioinformatics research.

Throughout the day our students interacted with scientists directly. Activities included sampling, synthetic biology, microbiomes, informatics sequencing, and a career panel.

We are very fortunate to have partnerships with leading researchers in genomics such as the scientists at JCVI!

Inventor of Scratch Dr. Resnick Shares Insights with SDUSD Community

Elementary principals, educators, and students joined industry partners for the Future for Learning - Re-Envisioning Elementary Education experience with Dr. Mitchel Resnick on April 8th. The event was made possible by the Moxie Foundation and LEGO Education.

Dr. Resnick is a LEGO Papert Professor of Learning Research at the MIT Media Lab and develops new technologies and activities to engage children in learning experiences. His lifelong Kindergarten research group developed the Scratch programming software and online community. The group also collaborates with LEGO Education on the development of new educational ideas and products.

Dr. Resnick led a presentation describing how projects, passion, peers, and play can work together to create meaningful learning opportunities for students. He also introduced Scratch, which is a free programming language and online community where students can create interactive stories, games, and animations. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively, which are all 21st century skills.

Participants explored how passion, play, peers, and projects can help us re-envision the elementary experience for students. We walked away with desired states and paths to get there with collaboration from industry, students and educators!

Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary School: The No Place for Hate Project

Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary School, was the recipient of a grant offered by the San Diego Unified School District to train 25 of our fourth and fifth grade students in the No Place for Hate program this fall with the Anti-Defamation League. This training empowered students to create a positive school climate, address bullying and build an inclusive school community by promoting unity and respect. Schools who received grants,\ promise to complete three campus wide projects throughout the school year so that each student in grades K-5 learn the tenets of the program.

The first step in this project was for Lindbergh Schweitzer counselor, Darlene Kanzler, to teach classroom lessons about valuing diversity, including each other, and respecting differences. Each student had the opportunity to share what makes them unique or different from their schoolmates, what is difficult about this difference and what is positive about it. This generated deep conversations and gave kids the opportunity to express things that have been inside of them for years.

The next step was to create an art piece that could be enjoyed by our entire community. Lindbergh Schweitzer Media Production Assistant, Terri James, made the outline of a Peace Dove and blank feathers for each student and staff member to decorate in a way that expressed their uniqueness. Terri documented the entire process, which can be seen in this video: https://www.sandiegounified.org/schools/lindbergh-schweitzer/no-place-hate-project

The finished Peace Dove has more than 400 decorated feathers and is over 7 feet tall and 7 feet wide. Lindbergh Schweitzer has the Peace Dove hanging in the main office so parents and students feel welcomed the moment they step into the building. This project demonstrates our school’s and district's commitment to valuing all of our students while teaching students how to create a kind and accepting learning environment.

“Raising Zoey” Screening Event at San Diego Central Library

We had over 100 guests in attendance for LGBTQIA+ Education & Advocacy’s screening of “Raising Zoey,” a wonderful documentary about the coming-of-age story of a trans teen named Zoey. Attendees had the opportunity to peruse the resources of our many community partners in attendance, including Rady Children’s Hopital’s Gender Affirming Care Program, SDUSD’s Family Engagement Department, San Diego Pride, GLSEN San Diego, PFLAG, Gender Phluid Collective, Trans Family Support Services, and The LGBT Community Center. Students from Morse High School’s culinary program provided cultural dishes and the director of the documentary, Dante Alencastre, held a Q & A directly after the screening. It was amazing to see so many youth and families there!

Arts Shine at Madison Community Showcase Night

On Wednesday, April 10, the Madison Community of Schools banded together to offer a new “Showcase Night,” a community open house to promote the schools in the cluster. Over 1500 students and community members attended this first-ever event.

On the campus of Creative Performing and Media Arts (CPMA) Middle School, numerous school exhibitor tables and interactive displays were presented. The library held a visual art gallery, filled with artwork from grades TK-12 throughout the cluster. The theater was packed with audience members watching three hours’ worth of rotating performances of dance, music, and theatre from all grade levels. CPMA also unveiled their new student-created mural with a ceremony at 6:30pm.

This event was designed to unite residents and neighborhood schools while demonstrating the variety of educational opportunities in the Madison cluster. While much of the event focused on the arts, many other types of of student work were also on display, from science projects and robotics exhibits to high school JROTC and cheerleading demonstrations, all supported by local community partners and food vendors. There was a book fair, and even a petting zoo.

Participating schools in the Madison Community of Schools included Field, Hawthorne, Lafayette, Lindbergh-Schweitzer, Sequoia, and Whitman Elementary Schools, Innovation and CPMA Middle Schools, Muir K-8, and Madison High School.

The Madison Community Showcase Night was sponsored by The VAPA Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to, “enhance the quality of and access to arts education in the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD).”

Carson Has Heart!

Carson Elementary STEAM Magnet just hosted its first annual Carson Has Heart Maker Market and Open House. Students from every grade level and classroom created products to sell at the school’s maker market using design thinking as the basis for their creations. Each class set up a booth on the playground showcasing their process and carrying a message of empathy in the designs they presented. From lawn signs with positive messages to upcycled planters made from discarded water bottles, the designers demonstrated how Carson has heart.

In addition to student projects, the community, parents and partners also shared the work they have been doing to make Carson Elementary an incredible STEAM hub in Linda Vista!

Lincoln High School Seniors Attend College Signing Day 2019 at UCSD

On Wednesday, May 1st, the Lincoln High School Counseling team, lead by 12th-grade counselor, Ms. Kellie Larsen, brought 50+ graduating seniors to the College Signing Day event at UCSD. Joining other high school students from around San Diego County, the participants were able to celebrate their achievements with a block party consisting of a DJ, photo booths with signing boards, and a Resource Fair. The block party was followed by an address from UCSD’s chancellor Khosla, professor Graeve, and an alumni panel. Later, former First Lady Michelle Obama addressed all invited students via live stream from UCLA. The highlight of the speech was when she shared that, "I had someone tell me I shouldn’t reach too high…let me tell you that will happen to you again and again. In those times you have to ask yourself, when are you gonna believe the haters, and when are you gonna believe the truth of your story?" Overall, students walked away with a sense of pride and ready to embark on their self-determined future.

College Signing Day, co-sponsored by the University of California, is a national celebration of students, especially those from low-income, underrepresented, and first-generation college-going backgrounds, who have boldly committed to pursuing higher education. Held in partnership with Reach Higher, the college access initiative launched by former first lady Michelle Obama during her time at the White House, College Signing Day honors students for taking charge of their futures by pursuing education past high school — whether at a community college, a military institution, a four-year college or university, or a professional training program.

Self Care at OB Elementary

On May 2nd, the Children and Youth in Transition Team (CYT) presented a trauma informed practices presentation to Ocean Beach Elementary staff. The professional development training “Self-Care for the Educator” is one of a series of four presentations that the CYT department offers. From the training, participants learn the ABC's of self-care, the definitions and signs of compassion fatigue, and take a self-assessment regarding their current levels of wellness. Wellness supports and resources to enhance long and short-term self-care are discussed. One participant commented, he felt this was an "essential training" for every school site. Over twenty-five schools in San Diego Unified School District have participated in the professional development series in the 18-19 school year thus far. Interested schools should contact the CYT department to sign up for trainings. The remaining trauma informed practices presentations include: "Trauma and the Brain," “The Trauma Informed School Site,” and “Mindup Curriculum Implementation.” The professional development trainings are available throughout the 18-19 school year and for the 19-20 school year.

School Counselors Introduced to Restorative Justice Practices (RJP)

As part of their quarterly meetings, Elementary and Middle School counselors recently participated in workshops facilitated by members of the Restorative Justice Practices (RJP) Department. This professional development (PD) opportunity was co-created by the newly hired RJP Program Manager, Michelle Ferrer and Counseling & Guidance head counselors. Attendees broke down some of the misconceptions many hold with relation to RJP and learned about the importance of working to create relationship-centered schools.
Participants learned the department's vision of spreading the "three R’s" values that center on respect, relationships, and responsibility districtwide. Counselors also spent time breaking down what occurs at a school site on a good day and a bad day, then identified the root causes of both.
Following the training, attending counselors provided feedback on their experience.
The following are examples of some of their “Ah-Ha” moments.
  • This is a framework that can be customized for each school setting depending on needs.
  • Restorative practices don't just take place in circles - it's an approach that can be applied in all interactions.
  • I can still be restorative even if I do not have time to do circles with my one day at each school site.
  • My aha moment is that some RJ practices can be implemented easily and informally, without needing a formal, structured program.
  • I must practice courage even on my "bad" days to show up for my students AND model restorative behavior and language with staff (even the non believers). ·
  • RJ is a way of being all the time.
